What is a drainage misconnection?

Homes usually have separate routes for wastewater and rainwater. A drainage misconnection happens when wastewater from a sink, shower, toilet or washing machine is connected to the surface water route instead of the foul drainage system.

Surface water drainage can run straight to a local river or brook. That means untreated wastewater can reach the waterway whenever the appliance is used.

A misconnection may have been installed years ago and can go unnoticed. Finding the route and confirming the fault are important before it is corrected.
